INDIGENOUS YOUTH TRIP FAQ
Can a youth who is turning 14 this year but is currently 13 attend? Participating youth should be age 14 - 18 at the time of the trip
How do we get our youth to the pick up point? Is that our responsibility? Parents/wards/carpools are responsible for getting their youth to the pickup point.
Will leaders be background checked? They will not, but we will follow the guidelines of the Church's Children and Youth Protection Training.
Will there be a nurse or medical staff to administer medications? While a licensed nurse will not be present, an adult leader with basic medical training will be available. Youth should be able to responsibly take their own medications. For safety reasons, some medications—such as controlled substances—may be held and administered by a youth leader when appropriate.
What is the sleeping arrangement at the hotels? Boys on one floor, girls on a different floor. 4-5 youth per room. There will be bed sharing and/or floor bunking. Youth may bring their own blanket and pillow for the bus and sleeping arrangements.
Will there be parent chaperones in the rooms? No. In accordance with Church policy, parents and adult chaperones will stay in separate rooms on the same floor as the youth.
Will there be "code of conduct" for the youth? Yes. Once your registration is confirmed, families will receive additional information outlining the expected code of conduct and behavior guidelines for the trip.
What if a youth doesn't want to participate in a certain activity? If a youth feels uncomfortable or overwhelmed by a specific activity, they are encouraged to respectfully let an adult leader know their reason. Youth may be allowed to sit out of an activity when appropriate; however, they must remain with the group and under adult supervision at all times. For safety reasons, youth may not leave the group or participate in activities on their own at any time.
What if a youth has allergies? Please be sure to note any allergies on the medical release form. We will do our best to make reasonable accommodations, and we encourage youth to bring approved snacks to help support their individual needs.
Will my youth get to pick their roommates? We encourage youth to build new friendships and connect with others their age during the trip. While we will take roommate requests into consideration, placement will be made with the overall experience and safety of the group in mind. Room time will be limited, with most time spent participating in planned activities.
