The Utah Area leadership of  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Gathering of Tribes invite you to a special in-person event on September 13th in American Fork, Utah. 

 

Good Medicine centers on the healing power of traditional arts and the ways they connect to Indigenous peoples' faith in Jesus Christ, the Creator of all things.

 

Join us for a cultural sunrise ceremony that will express gratitude for the sealing ordinances of the temple and the doctrine of eternal families, participate in a temple session, and partake in workshops that share traditional Indigenous ways of healing that reflect the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Sunrise Ceremony honoring our ancestors and expressing gratitude for the doctrine of eternal families. Regalia and traditional clothing are welcome and encouraged. For clothing changes, facilities for dressing will be available at the Developmental Center Chapel.

"Embracing Your Culture, Embracing Your God"

Areli Garcia (Mexicana) invites participants to discover the power of embracing their cultural identity as a pathway to strengthening their relationship with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. Together we will explore the meaning of culture, the blessings of being rooted in our heritage, and how this connection can deepen our understanding of divine nature. 

"Hopi Pottery and Divine Design"
Traditional Hopi potter Evvy Trujillo presents on pottery making and design used to connect people to the Creator, Jesus Christ.

"Weaving Healing: Accessing Christ's Balm of Gilead through Culture"

Michele Reyes (Navajo) shares her personal story of finding healing after her car accident—through Navajo weaving and the Savior's ability to make whole. Come learn to anchor when life feels unfair in this harmonious way of connecting culture and the gospel. Learn about how to create reminders through the visual reminders of Navajo designs.

SPECIAL YOUTH SESSION (Ages 11-17)

“Feeding the Good Wolf: Choosing Christ”

Gavriel Wise (Ojibwe) will lead youth in a discussion exploring the Native American story of the two wolves and what it teaches about spirituality, identity, and discipleship. Together we will learn how choosing to “feed the good wolf” leads us closer to Jesus Christ, and create our own “good wolf” to take home. 

 

2:00 PM - SESSION 2

“Sing From Your Heart”

Curtis Walker (Omaha/Hopi) will showcase Southern Style traditional songs and their teachings that glorify our Father In Heaven.

"Women in the Scriptures"

Alondra Uhi (Peruvian) will discuss the motivations for her work creating diverse depictions of scriptural characters, particularly women of the scriptures whose stories are less well-known. 

"Traditional Tongan Artifacts and Faith in the Creator"

Lynette Finau (Tongan) explores the beauty and meaning of traditional Tongan artifacts and art, highlighting how designs, materials, and stories reflect a deep reverence for the Creator. We will look at how these traditions point to Jesus Christ, the source of all creation, and how cultural expressions of art can strengthen faith, identity, and connection to God.

SPECIAL CHILDREN’S SESSION (Ages 5-11):

"The Creator’s Gifts: Art for Children"

Brandon Curtis (Navajo) and his wife Joy, an accomplished artist, help children create art focusing on Jesus Christ.

 

3:00 PM - SESSION 3

"Smudging: Healing and Prayer"

Kasey Dominguez (Diné) leads a discussion on the use of sacred plants like sage, cedar, sweetgrass for use in traditional cleansing for prayer, or smudging. Participants will be able to bind their own bundle of traditional herbs to take with them. 

"Traditional Pueblo Imagery in Christian-themed Religious Art"
Award-winning artists in multiple mediums (watercolor, oil, acrylic), mother-and-daughter painters Ima Hale (Santa Clara Pueblo) and Kwani Povi Winder (Santa Clara Pueblo) will discuss the way they balance and incorporate their religious beliefs and culture into their artwork. 

“Mending the Hoop”

Jerad Todacheenie (Navajo/Tlinglit) utilizes Native American concepts to reinforce cultural teachings through the hoop dance to strengthen self-identity, faith, and healing. 

"Gifts from Creator"
Evvy Trujillo (Hopi) presents on the art of Hopi basket making and farming of plants for medicinal, ceremonial, and other uses, as gifts from the Creator to live a peaceful, balanced life.
